Summer internships in NYC and SF are the on-ramp to most knowledge-economy careers — finance, tech, consulting, media, biotech. The application game is heavily front-loaded: most major firms close summer recruiting between September and November of the prior year. If you're reading this in May for a summer internship, you've missed the official window for the biggest employers — but rolling and second-round opportunities still exist.
NYC by neighborhood
Wall Street + FiDi (10004, 10005, 10006)
Where the bulge-bracket banks and boutique advisors live. Goldman Sachs (200 West St, 10282), Morgan Stanley (1585 Broadway, 10036, technically Midtown but close), JPMorgan's investment bank (270 Park Ave, 10017), Citigroup (388 Greenwich, 10013), Bank of America Tower (One Bryant Park, 10036), Lazard (30 Rock, 10112), Evercore (55 E 52nd, 10055), Centerview Partners (10004). Bond and rates desks cluster around 200 West and Park Ave.
Hudson Yards + Midtown West (10001, 10018)
The new finance and tech corridor. BlackRock (10018), KKR (10001 in Hudson Yards), Wells Fargo (10018), BCG (10018). Hudson Yards (10001) has been pulling firms westward from Park Avenue since 2019.
Midtown East (10017, 10022)
Big Tech NY offices: Google (111 Eighth Ave, 10011 — slightly downtown), Apple (Grand Central, 10017), Amazon (10001 + 10003), Microsoft (Times Square, 10036). Plus most law firms (Cravath, Wachtell, Sullivan & Cromwell) and consulting headquarters (McKinsey, Bain, BCG).
Flatiron + Chelsea + SoHo (10010, 10003, 10013)
Tech startup land. WeWork (10003), Datadog (10003), Etsy (in DUMBO, 11201), Squarespace (10003), Glossier (10013), Peloton (10010). Most NYC startup internships in the $50K-and-up category are in this corridor.
Brooklyn — DUMBO + Williamsburg (11201, 11211, 11249)
Etsy headquarters (DUMBO, 11201), Vice Media (11201), Brooklyn Brewery (11211 — yes, beer companies hire interns), and a growing cluster of media + design startups. The vibe is more casual; the pay is generally lower than Manhattan.
SF Bay Area by neighborhood
SoMa (94103, 94105, 94107)
The dense tech corridor. Salesforce Tower (415 Mission St, 94105), Stripe (510 Townsend, 94103), OpenAI (Pioneer Building, 575 Florida St, 94110 — adjacent), Anthropic (Mission Bay area), Pinterest (651 Brannan, 94107), Slack-now-Salesforce (94105), Airbnb (888 Brannan, 94103). Most SF tech internships are within a 10-block radius.
FiDi (94104, 94111)
Salesforce (Mission St, 94105, but FiDi-adjacent), the SF outposts of major banks (Goldman Sachs at 555 California, 94104), and law firms (Latham, Wilson Sonsini). Less startup density than SoMa.
Mission Bay + Dogpatch (94158, 94107)
Biotech and life-sciences cluster, anchored by UCSF Mission Bay campus. Genentech satellite offices, multiple early-stage biotech startups. If you're pre-med or bioengineering, this is the zip code to know.
Mountain View + Menlo Park + Cupertino (94043, 94025, 95014)
Big Tech HQs. Google (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, 94043), Meta (1 Hacker Way, Menlo Park, 94025), Apple (Apple Park, 95014), LinkedIn (94043), Tesla (Palo Alto, 94304). Internships at these companies typically pay $9K–$13K/month plus housing stipend.

What you actually need to prep
For investment banking / consulting interviews
- Technical questions: DCF, comparable analysis, accounting (3 statements + how they connect), enterprise vs equity value.
- Behavioral: 'walk me through your resume,' 'why this firm,' 'tell me about a time you led a team.'
- For consulting: market sizing, profitability case frameworks, and 1–2 mock case interviews per week starting in summer.
- Markets-aware: know the current Fed funds rate, last week's earnings movers, and one M&A deal in your target sector.
For tech / engineering interviews
- LeetCode: 200–500 problems by recruiting season, focused on top 100 medium difficulty for your target companies.
- System design (for senior internship roles or new-grad): Designing Data-Intensive Applications, Grokking the System Design Interview.
- Behavioral: STAR-format stories for 'tell me about a time' questions.
- For ML roles: classical ML + transformer architecture + recent papers (RLHF, instruction tuning, agentic patterns).

If you missed the early cycle
Don't write off the summer. Rolling roles open February–April for: smaller PE/VC funds, early-stage startups (especially in YC's W26 batch hiring summer interns in March), nonprofits and government programs (NYC SYEP for under-25s, Mayor's Fellows for grads), and product/operations roles at mid-size tech firms. Cold-emailing founders directly works at the seed-Series-B stage; recruiters are the wrong path there.
